KEVIN RHODES

RED BAY, AL - Kevin David Rhodes, 30, died Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital.  He was born in Ohio and was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Red Bay.

Services will be Tuesday, December 3, 11:00 a.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay with Bro. Clint Knoles and Bro. John Butler officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife Amy Rhodes; one son-Kendon Rhodes; his mother Melinda Rhodes; brother-Bradley Rhodes; grandmother-Vernice Humphries all of Red Bay; two uncles-Garry Humphries (Denise) of Red Bay and Quinn Humphries (Linda) of Golden.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Monday, December 2, 6-9 p.m. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay and until service time Tuesday.

RILEY STEPP

RED BAY, AL – Riley D. Stepp, 75, died Friday, November 29, 2013 at his residence.  He was born in Red Bay to Roy Casey and Edna Yielding Stepp.  He was retired from Reynolds and was a member of the Red Bay Free Will Baptist Church.  He was a veteran of the US Air Force security service.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 1 at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay with Bro. A.G. Stepp and Dallas Culver officiating.  Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years-Carolyn Stepp of Red Bay; two daughters-Melisha Culver (Dallas) of Decatur and Traci Stepp of Golden; seven grandchildren-Shanna Turner, Chad Robinson, Brandon Murphy, Micah Murphy, Leslie Robinson, Chloe Robinson and Briley Robinson; two step-grandchildren-Austin and Caroline Culver; seven great grandchildren; three sisters-Janette Stepp, Nancy Lynch and Brenda Massey (Rayburn); one brother-Keith Stepp (Kay); his mother-in-law-Lucille Cagle of Red Bay; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter-Melinda Kay Stepp.

Pallbearers will be Chad Robinson, Micah Murphy, Doug Byrd, Stuart Setliff, Rayburn Massey and Brandon Murphy.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Briley Robinson and Jayden Turner.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 1, 12-2 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay.


ANTHONY PAGE

RED BAY, AL. – Anthony Oneal Page, Jr., 63, died Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born May 26, 1950 in Franklin County, Al. and was a heavy equipment operator, He attended Halltown Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, November 21, at Halltown Cemetery, Vina, Al. with Scott Lindsey officiating.  Burial will be in Halltown Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife – Kathy Page, Red Bay, Al.; seven children – Carol Page Austin (Davy) Savannah, Tn., Marc Page (Crystal), Mitch Page, Joseph Page, Lee Alan Page, Cynthia Fowler and Lori Collum (Brent) all of Red Bay, Al.; grandchildren – Luke, Jake and Leah Austin, Brady Page, Ryder and Sawyer Page, Lauren Gober, Layla Bilstein and Isabella Fowler; his father – Neal Page; brothers and sisters – Alice Berry (Johnny), Lee Page (Jan), Linda Wren (Eddie), Sarah McKinney (Ed), Joel Page (Caroline) and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, EstaLee Page and a nephew, Brandon Berry.

ROBIN PATTERSON

RUSSELLVILLE, AL. – Robin Annette Patterson, 50, passed away November 6, 2013 after a sudden illness. She was born April 13, 1963 in Waukegan, Il. She was a registered nurse at Shoals Hospital and had previously worked at The Wound Center and ECM Hospital. She was a member of Halltown Methodist Church.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Scott Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Old Burleson Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband – Stanley Patterson; one son – Cory Hale; one brother - Mark Ott (Cheryl); sister-in-law –Teresa Novak; mother-in-law – Jolene Patterson and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Bobbie Ott.

Pallbearers will be Scott Roberson, Heath Halcomb, Chris Lindsey, Danny Taylor, Junior Cromeans and James Lindsey.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, November 8, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. and until service time on Saturday. 

DAVID SIMS

RED BAY, AL. – David “Dixie Runner” Sims, 54, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at University Medical Center, Jackson, Ms. He was born July 25, 1959 in Red Bay, Al. and was a truck driver.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, at Ridge Cemetery, Golden, Ms. with Bro. Gary Puckett and Bro. Billy Allen officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his parents – Ray and Ilene Sims, Red Bay, Al.; brother – Stevie Sims (Barbara) Red Bay, Al.; three children – Courtney Sims Davis (Jacob), Katie Hatcher and D.J. Sims; nephews and niece – Brady and Sarah Sims and Channing Burgett and three grandchildren – Madison, Willow and AnnaBelle.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Travis & Minnie Sims and Willie & Letry Sartin.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.

WANDA MILLS

RED BAY, AL. – Wanda Marie Mills, 64, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Helen Keller Hospital. She was born March 19, 1949 in Houston, Ms. She was a beautician for 20 years and a care provider for 20 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Red Bay and a member of the Housing Development Board in Red Bay, Al.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, at First Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Bill Harper officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Golden, Ms. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two children – Carey Mills (Kirsten) Meridianville, Al. and Cassie Mills, Round Lake Beach, Il.; three grandchildren – Cullen, Chloe and Caden Mills; one sister – Debbie Thompson, Pontotoc, Ms. and one brother – Robbie Butler, Fulton, Ms.

Pallbearers will be Jason Witt, Larry Witt, C.T. Mills, James Neal and Stuart Pearson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Visitation will be 12-2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, at First Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al.

NANCY HASTINGS

RED BAY, AL. – Nancy Hallmark Hastings, 71, died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at UAB Hospital, Birmingham, Al. She was born December 12, 1941 in Belmont, Ms. Nancy was a very caring person and was very compassionate as a certified nurses aide working in home health for 25 years. She was a member of Red Bay Freewill Baptist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, at Red Bay Freewill Baptist Church with Bro. Steve Lindsay, Bro. Jerry Ginn and Tyler Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband of 51 years – Don Hastings, Red Bay, Al.; five children – Donnie Hastings Jr. (Valarie) Red Bay, Al., Mark Hastings (Laura) Oakman, Al., Joe Hastings (Christy Hellums) Ridgeland, Ms., JoAnna Allred (Scotty) Tupelo, Ms. and Samantha Wadsworth (Eric) Hoover, Al. and seven grandchildren – Kevin, Hannah Grace, Alexia, Tyler, Hall, Danielle and Ethan; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Augustus Jesse Hallmark and Eva Moore Hallmark, one brother, Jesse Moore Hallmark (Linda), one sister, Betty Chandler and a brother-in-law, Bill Chase.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Nelson, Bill Nabers, James Marbutt, Eddie Prestage, Kelly Hester, Carroll Ivy and Scotty Skinner.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.  and she will lie in state 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, at Red Bay Freewill Baptist Church.

GERTHA DAVIS

RED BAY, AL. – Gertha Mae Davis, 81, left her earthly body to be with her heavenly Father on Monday, October 14, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born April 26, 1932 in Franklin County, Al. and was a homemaker.  She was a member of Red Bay Church of God of Prophecy. She loved going to church, listening to gospel music and was a faithful prayer warrior.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 17, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Rev. Gerome Key, Rev. Harvey Mitchell, Rev. Rick Sentell and Bro. Ricky Humphries officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Golden, Ms. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years – Johnny A. Davis; one sister – Dorothy Mae Humphries; one brother – Rev. Harvey Mitchell (Katie); devoted special niece – Lucille Humphries; nieces – Cynthia Basham (Dewayne) and Lori Sentell (Rick) and nephews – Ricky Humphries (Lisa), Joe Dewayne Mitchell (Janice), Larry Mitchell, Travis Mitchell (Mandy) and Joe Joe Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joe H. & Emily Holley and Jesse & Dithular Mitchell; mother, Florence Jackson Mitchell; father, Guy Mitchell; an infant daughter, Barbara Brown; brother, Joseph Ray Mitchell; niece, Barbara Mitchell and special brother-in-law, Charles Humphries.

Pallbearers will be her nephews and friends.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. and until service time on Thursday.

ALBERT LERNER II

VINA, AL-Albert Edward Lerner II, 68, died Saturday, October 12 at ECM Hospital.  He was born in Highland Park, MI to Albert Edward and Eva Mavis Carnes Lerner.  He was retired from Ford Motor Co after 31 years.  He was a veteran of the US Marines serving during Vietnam and was one of the founding fathers of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154.

There will be no public service.  Deaton Funeral Home assisted the family.

He is survived by three children-Christina Evers (Randy), Albert Edward Lerner III and Michael Lerner all of MI; three grandchildren; one great grandson; brothers and sisters-Carrole Ann Rugenstein, Robert G. Lerner, Linda Kinnenun, Don Lerner and Dave Lerner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-James Lerner.

TOMMY MORGAN

GOLDEN, MS. – Thomas Edward “Tommy” Morgan, 63, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at North Ms. Medical Center Hospice. He was born October 5, 1950 in Tupelo, Ms. and was a security guard.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Chaplain Jerry Grammer officiating. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife – Brenda Morgan, Golden, Ms.; four children – Angela Gilmore (Bobby) and Shannon Morgan, all of Mooreville, Ms., Robbie Burns (Special Friend- Patty Scott) Red Bay, Al. and Steven Morgan (Kim) Saltillo, Ms.; one sister – Linda Jane Lower, Denham Springs, La.; one brother – Luther C. Morgan, Fulton, Ms.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Cecil “Red” Morgan and Gracie Lee Cullum Morgan, one sister, Elaine Lancaster and one brother, Robert Morgan.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.

W.C. LINDLEY

HODGES, AL. – William C. “W.C.” Lindley, 70, died Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Marion Regional Rehab & Longterm Care, Hamilton, Al. He was born September 29, 1942 in Red Bay, Al. and was an auto mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 1964-1966 serving in Germany. He attended Zion Schools in Zion, Il. and was a long time resident.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 28, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Scott Tharp officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Red Bay, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two daughters – Regina Markham, Red Bay, Al. and Mechelle Carpenter, Russellville, Al.; three grandchildren – Nichole Lancaster and Daniel Lancaster, both of Russellville, Al. and Josh Markham, Florence, Al.; one great-granddaughter – Madison Brylee Lancaster, Florence, Al.; one great-grandson – Grant Oneal Markham; two sisters – Helen Roark, Hodges, Al. and Linda Collins, Holley Springs, Al.; one brother – Dexter Lindley, Riverside, Al. and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Bertha Jones Lindley, three brothers, Billy Joe Lindley, Johnny Paul Lindley and Glen Royce Lindley and one sister, Deloris Irby.

Pallbearers will be his nephews.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 27, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. and until service time on Saturday.

ELVIE ROLLINS

RED BAY, AL – Elvie Rosezell Rollins, 103, died September 20, 2013 at Generations of Red Bay.  She was born in Alabama and was a homemaker.

Services will be Sunday, September 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Bro. W.D. Humphres officiating.  Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay will be officiating.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband-Montgomery Rollins, two brothers and six sisters.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 22, 2013, from 9-11 at the funeral home.


JIM HORTON

VINA, AL –James R. “Jim” Horton, 73, died Friday, September 20, 2013 at Helen Keller Hospital.  He was born in Alabama to Roy and Lucille Gober Horton.  He owned and operated Horton’s BBQ, Horton’s Clothing Store and the Gulf Station for many years.  He attended Community Center Baptist Church. 

Services will be Sunday, September 22, 2:00 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Bro. Donald Raper and Bro. Rick Murrell officiating.  Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three children-Gina Raper (Donald) of Madison, Tony Horton (Lynette) and Tammy Duncan (Byron) all of Red Bay; two step children-Kristie Rhodes (Dennis) of Purvis, MS and Kelly Stewart (Brandon) of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren-Joseph Raper, Taira Dotson (Robert), Allyssa Horton, Anthony Horton, Mariah Horton, Tyler Duncan and Tiffany Thorne (Heath); four great grandchildren-Kieli and Autumn Dotson, Jeremiah and Joshua Thorne; one step great grandchild-Gabriella Montoya; two brothers-Roy M. Horton and Bob Horton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-Durell Horton.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Raper, Anthony Horton, Tyler Duncan, Heath Thorne, Robert Dotson and Brad Ivy.

Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL.  

WES GRIFFUS

VINA, AL. – William Wesley “Wes” Griffus, 90, died Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born December 25, 1922 in Marion County, Al. and was a farmer. He was a member of the Red Bay Church of God.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 22, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Gary Puckett and Bro. Brian Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Shottsville Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are four children – Shirley Juanell Michael, Vina, Al., Bobby Ray Griffus (Teresa) Greenhill, Al., Janette “Jan” Sutton, Florence, Al. and Jackie Waymon Griffus, Red Bay, Al.; five grandchildren – Brian & Jason Sutton, Cyndy Cohen, Tisha Vanderbeck and Mikey Michael; five great-grandchildren – Taylor, Will, MaKayla, Kennan and Zoe and one sister – Victoria Duncan of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby J. Emerson Griffus and seven brothers and sisters, Lonar, Myrtle, Micky, Minerva Jane, Bryce, Victor and Marlon.

Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, September 22, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.

REX HUDSON

HODGES, AL. – Rex Houston Hudson, 70, died Friday, September 20, 2013 at ECM Hospital. He was born February 15, 1943 in Alabama and was an auto mechanic for 40 years. He was a Baptist.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. James Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Old Line Cemetery, Hodges, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two sons – Joe Hudson (Patricia) Chicago, Il. and Anthony Hudson, Hodges, Al.; one daughter – Elizabeth Hudson, Chicago, Il.; four grandchildren – Victoria Viglietta, Joey Viglietta, Anthony Viglietta and Josh Viglietta; two great-grandchildren – MaKayla Mae Smith and Nevaeh Lynn Smith; one brother – Ray Hudson, Hackleburg, Al.; two sisters – Kathy Jane Pinkelton, Memphis, Tn. and Debra Hugh, Tuscaloosa, Al. and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Viglietta, Joshua Viglietta, Joesph Viglietta, Cody Baker, Josh Lawler and Paul Payne.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Monday, September 23, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. and until service time on Tuesday.

SYBIL HABER

GOLDEN, MS. – Sybil Paden Haber, 78, died Friday, September 13, 2013 in Itawamba County, Ms. She was born April 2, 1935 in Mississippi and was a beautician for 50 years.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Gene Cooley officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by one daughter – Patty A. Tidd (Preston G.) Weston, Wisconsin.; two grandchildren – Jason L. Tidd (Renae) and Patti J. Tidd, all of Weston, Wisconsin; one great-granddaughter – Brianna Tidd; one great-grandson – Vincent A. Young; three brothers – Floyd Paden (Jean) and Charles Paden (Becky) all of Golden, Ms. and Earl Paden (Demple) Red Bay, Al. and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Minnie Searcy Paden; her husband, Larry Haber, three brothers, Cecil, Grady and Kenneth Paden and one sister, Reba Swindle.

Visitation will be 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.

NELL GRACE NIX

RED BAY, AL. – Nell Grace Nix, 91, died Friday, September 6, 2013 at Southern Magnolia Estates, Golden, Ms. She worked for many years at Montgomery Ward in Dallas, Tx. and was a member of First Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al.

There will be a private family service. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. assisted the family.

Survivors are three children – Elizabeth Nabers (Merrill) Albuquerque, N.M., Judy Tiffin (Bob) Florence, Al. and Ralph Nix (Donna) Red Bay, Al.; eight grandchildren – Derek Nabers, Darrell Nabers, Tim Tiffin, Van Tiffin, Lex Tiffin, David Nix, Elizabeth Nix and Grace Nix; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Archie M. Nix, Jr.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Southern Magnolia Estates for their loving care and support.

R.C. BURGETT

RED BAY, AL – R.C. Burgett, 88, died Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Southern Magnolia in Golden.  He was born in Alabama to Harrison and Audrey Williams Burgett.  He was an operator for Diamond Shamrock Oil Co. and a member of First Baptist Church in Red Bay.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 9, at noon at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Bro. Larry Hill officiating. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his son Ronald Burgett (Judy) of Vina; his daughter-Linda Weaver (Danny) of Lakeland, TN; three grandchildren-Shawn Burgett, Tricia Trousdale and Lisa Greene; five great grandchildren; two sisters-Faye Cayson and Nella Jean Hadley; and one brother-Wayne Burgett.

He was preceded in death by his wife Pansy Burgett; his parents; two brothers-W.C. Burgett and Bobby Burgett and one sister-Eloise Childers.

Visitation will be Monday, September 9 from 10-12 at Deaton Funeral Home.

JIMMY RAY HASTINGS

RED BAY, AL. – Jimmy Ray Hastings, 73, died Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital.  He was born October 4, 1939 in Mississippi and was a forklift driver for American Motors.

Services will be a 2 p.m. Monday, September 9, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jackie Hastings officiating.  Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Golden, Ms.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are four children – Patricia Hastings Hanzel, Kenosha, Wi., Terry Hastings, Roundlake, Il., James Hastings, Beachpark, Il. and Heather Hastings, Oakbrook, Il.; two grandchildren – Amanda Hanzel and Bradley Hanzel; four sisters – Eva Turbyfill, Vina, Al., Brenda Taylor, Kenosha, Wi., Dimple Faye Petree, Golden, Ms. and Glenda Mills, Zion, Il.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Joseph Hastings and Wilma Alma Ballard Hastings and siblings, Ruple James and Willie Joe Northam.

Pallbearers will be Terry Hastings, Brad Hanzel, Johnny Hargett, Bruce Stewart, Chris Ginn and Barney McCarthy.

Visitation will be 12-2 p.m. on Monday, September 9, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.

GLEN STRICKLAND

RED BAY, AL. – Horace Glen Strickland, 78, died Thursday, September 5, 2013 at North Ms. Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1935 in Alabama and was a salesman for Sunshine Dog Food. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al. and a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Survivors are his wife of 51 years – Jessie Strickland, Red Bay, Al.; two daughters – Valerie Morrow (Chris) and Carol Reynolds (David), all of Red Bay, Al.; five grandchildren – Dana Robinson (Joey), Paige Thorne (Trenton), Cody Reynolds, Tyler Reynolds and McCayla Finley; four great-grandchildren – Tanner, Talli, Keiley and Peyton; two brothers – Norris Strickland and Delbert Strickland and one sister – Shirley Draddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Flora Strickland and one sister, Nell Odell.

JOE COLLUM

RED BAY, AL. – Joe “Bondo” Collum, 68, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at his residence. He was born September 18, 1944 in Mississippi and worked in auto body repair. He was a member of Red Bay Holy Church of Christ. Joe loved his cat, Harley.

There will be no funeral services. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. assisted the family.

Survivors are his wife – Nancy Collum, Red Bay, Al.; three children – Tony Collum, Lynn Leathers and Jennifer Cox; nine grandchildren – Emilie, Miranda, Sara, Will, Cody, Stacy, Jessica Harvey, Sophia and Lorelei and two sisters – Dot Murphy and Carolyn Johnston.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Collum and George Collum and a sister, Louise Collins.

VINA, AL. – Ruby L. Hester Mullins, 89, died Sunday, August 25, 2013 in Vina. She was born October 30, 1923 in Vina, Al. and was a factory worker for 40 years. She was a member of Vina First Baptist Church.

Ollie May Holcomb Mayhall, 96, died Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born December 12, 1916 in Tishomingo County, Ms. and was a homemaker. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

VINA, AL. – Jessie Ray White, 49, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at his residence. He was born January 17, 1964 in Red Bay, Al. He was a factory worker for 18 years.

GOLDEN, MS. – Lillie Mae Collum Hargett, 96, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born April 16, 1917 in Alabama and was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of Speedway Baptist Church, Memphis, Tn. She was an avid gardener and loved watching things grow. She was a loving wife, mother and the best Nanny in the world.

Services will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 7, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jack Maroon officiating.  Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery, Dennis, Ms.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are one daughter – Laverne Hargett Golden; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry G. Hargett and her son, James G. Hargett.

GOLDEN, MS. – I.C. Holland, 84, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Iuka Hospital. He was born September 12, 1928 in Alabama and was a factory worker in the mobile home industry.  He was a member of Bethel Church of God.

TREMONT, MS. - Earlene Elrod, 87, died Monday, June 3, 2013 in the care of her family. She was born April 14, 1926 in Fulton, Ms. to the late Jesse & Mary M. Griffus. She married Cecil Elrod on April 11, 1941 in Vina, Al. They moved to Illinois in 1952 and she worked for over 20 years at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan working her way to assistant dietician.  In 1979, Cecil & Earlene retired to Tremont. They attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Vina, Al. where Earlene served as a Sunday school teacher and volunteered in the nursery. She was always on the go, looking to help others in whatever way she could.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Vina, Al. with  Bro. Billy Nichols & Bro. Matthew Haney officiating.  Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her sons - Murvin Elrod, Zion, Il., Nelson Elrod (Glinda) Winthrop Harbor, Il., and Danny Joe Elrod, Zion, Il, seven grandchildren - Jim (Kris), Chris (Janet), Gary (Jennifer), Pat (Patricia), Joanna, Ashley (Jeffrey), Noah (Autumn); 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; her siblings -  Bill Griffus, J.W. Griffus (Cleo) and Birdie Mae Gann and her dear friend - Bill Warblow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Elrod, her daughter-in-law, Janet M. Elrod and numerous siblings.

Pallbearers will be Jim Elrod, Gary Elrod, Chris Elrod, Pat Elrod, Noah Elrod, and Nathan Elrod.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. She will lie in state 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15 at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

EDDIE W. BAIN

RED BAY, AL. – Eddie W. Bain, 63, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Helen Keller Hospital. He was born February 21, 1950 in Alabama and had been an employee of Tiffin Motor Homes for 17 years. He was a member of Community Center Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Strickland Cemetery, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jerome Key officiating.  Burial will be in Strickland Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are one daughter – Celena Kounelis (Chris) Vina, Al.; one granddaughter – Adalyn Kiraglen Kounelis; one sister – Laneice Bain, Red Bay, Al.; two nieces – Donna Thomason (Greg) Andalusia, Al. and Tina Cayson (Dennis) Red Bay, Al. and one great-niece – Samantha Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Bain and Hazel DeVaney Bain and three brothers, Hoyt Bain, Billy Bain and Jerry Bain.

GOLDEN, MS. – Reba M. White, 83, died Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born May 31, 1930 in Tishomingo County, Ms. and was a factory worker for more than 20 years.

RED BAY, AL. – Edna Mildred Mathewus, 87, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at her residence. She was born October 5, 1925 in Alabama and was a beautician. She was a member of Pentecostal Faith Church.

JAMES ABSTON

VINA, AL – James Abston, 77, of Vina, AL passed away June 2, 2013, at Red Bay Hospital.  He was born June 21, 1935 in Nashville, TN, the son of Haskell Eudell and Ethel Landrum Abston.  He was the husband of Lula McKinney Abston for 56 years.  Mr. Abston was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bryan Abston.  He was a member of Vina First Baptist Church, Vina, AL.

Mr. Abston was a graduate of Hillsboro High School in 1953.  After graduation, he enrolled at Belmont University and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.  Although he graduated and was ready to become a teacher, he felt he was called to become a minister.  Mr. Abston enrolled in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. and graduated in 1961.  After becoming a teacher and pastor, he returned to college and obtained a Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of North Alabama.  He accepted his role as pastor at West End Baptist Church, while attending Belmont University.  Throughout his ministry he became the pastor at Trinity Chapel in Elizabethtown, KY, Cottontown Baptist Church, Cottontown, TN, Belgreen Baptist Church, Belgreen, AL and retired from ministry at Spruce Pine Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, AL.  He devoted his life to ministry for over 50 years.  While fulfilling those duties as a pastor, he also worked for the Red Bay News for approximately 30 years as a photographer, staff writer, and had his own weekly column entitled, “Profiles”.  Mr. Abston also had a love for teaching.  He taught at Vina High School, Vina, AL, for 26 years.  He taught high school English and was the school’s Title I teacher.  Mr. Abston also held other duties throughout his life time such as; a member of the navy reserve, worked for the State of Kentucky in the Department of Welfare, worked for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, TN, Chairman of the Franklin County Human Resources, and was President of the Franklin County Teacher Association.  He was also a member of the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association.  Most importantly he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Abston is survived by his wife, Lula Abston; children-Barbara Kay (Allen), Lynette James (Jerry) and Billy Abston; grandchildren-Leslie Russell (Jason), Deanna Hester (Chris), Heather Schwartz (Meyer), Jill Abston, Neesha Scott (Derek), Emily Hagood (John), Katie James, and Sara Gillentine (Joseph); thirteen great grandchildren; sister-Barbara Abston Lamb (Clarence); and many aunts, nieces, cousins and friends.

The viewing for Mr. Abston will be held at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL on June 3 from 6-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at Vina First Baptist Church on June 4 beginning at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ray Kirk and Bro. Larry Dover officiating.  The body will lie in state at the church from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday.  Burial will be in Sparks Chapel Cemetery, Vina, AL.

Pallbearers will be Andy Cansler, Kent Walker, Sammy Taylor, Eddie Wix, Michael Moomaw, Marshal Rogers, Zollie McKinney and Curtis Sutton.

JOY EUGENE SPENCER

RED BAY, AL. – Joy Eugene Spencer, 85, died Friday, May 31, 2013 at Helen Keller Hospital. He was born February 28, 1928 in Alabama to Oscar and Teeny Jackson Spencer.  He was a veteran of the US Army serving in occupied Germany.

Survivors are two sons-Ronnie Spencer (Diane) of Wesson, MS and Don Spencer (Denise) of Red Bay; one daughter-Donna Rogers (Randy) of Vina; five grandchildren-Justin Spencer and Julie McGee both of Wesson, MS; Isaac and Anna Belle Spencer both of Red Bay and Jonathon Rogers of Vina; Five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; his caregiver-Donna Burks.

He was preceded in death by his wife-Juanita Quinn Spencer; his parents; three brothers-J.W. Spencer, Billy Spencer and Junior Spencer; and one sister-Louise Creekmore.

VERNON C. BLACKBURN, SR.

AURORA, IL. – Vernon C. Blackburn, Sr., 73, died Monday, May 27, 2013 in Naperville, Ill. He was born September 7, 1939 in Vina, AL. He was a member of the Boiler Makers Union for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working around in the yard.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Bro. W.D. Humphres officiating.  Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Vina, AL. LAKELAND, TN. – Barbara Ann Dillard, 72, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at her residence. She was born October 7, 1940 in Belmont to Ethel and Letha Dell Ozbirn Franks.

RED BAY, AL. – Icie Mae Stevens, 88, died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born July 29, 1924 in Alabama. She was a member of New Union Missionary Baptist Church in Red Bay.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband-William S. McCollum.

RED BAY, AL. – Steven Ray Criswell, Sr., 62, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at his residence. He was born February 27, 1951 in Alabama to Allen and Opal Dees Criswell.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Red Bay and a veteran of the US Army serving during Vietnam.

RED BAY, AL. – Ray Ashley, 82, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born November 15, 1930 in Mississippi to George and Jean Prestage Ashley.  He was a member of New Union Missionary Baptist Church and a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Wrangler as a mechanic.

 

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at New Union Missionary Baptist Church, Red Bay, AL with Gerald Collum and Bro. Greg Philamlee officiating. Burial will be in Halltown Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

 

Survivors are his wife of 61 years-Joyce Ashley of Red Bay; one son-Johnny Ashley (Wilma) of Red Bay; one daughter-Jeanie Ashley of Red Bay; grandson-Glendon Ashley; four great grandchildren-Chyenne Ashley, Duane Hughes, Glen Ashley and Tre Ashley; one sister-Ida Oliver of Tupelo.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-Pearl Ashley, Ervin Ashley, Estelle Bostick, Leona Garrison, Dewey Ashley, Alfred Ashley, Pertie Ashley and Virginia Pendergraph.

RED BAY, AL. – Annie D. Miller, 97, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at her residence. She was born July 6, 1915 in Rienzi, Ms. and was a homemaker.

Survivors are three sons – Jim Miller (Peggie) Red Bay, Al., Don Miller (Vickie) Mattoon, Il. and John Miller, Otascadero, Ca.; three daughters – Marie Anderson, Cooter, Mo., Nelda McIntyre (Bill) Michie, Tn. and Charlotte Winstead (Jim) Steele, Mo.; one sister – Lala Moore, Corinth, Ms.; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Earl Miller, a son-in-law, Sidney Richard “Buddy” Anderson, a grandson, Randy Douglas Anderson, a great-granddaughter, Carrie Lynn Jenkins, her parents, Robert Franklin Rider and Alice Ophelia Dees Rider, two brothers and one sister.

JULIAN JACKSON

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL. – Julian Thomas Jackson, 89, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at his residence. He was born August 10, 1923 in Belmont, Mississippi and was an American History teacher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in World War II in which he flew 53 bombing missions. He credited the Tuskegee Airmen for giving him the coverage to make it home.

 

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, at Belmont City Cemetery, Belmont, Ms. with Bro. Mark White officiating. Burial will be in Belmont City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

 

Survivors are his wife of 68 years – Nell Jackson, Muscle Shoals, Al.; one son – Julian Mark Jackson, Spanish Fort, Al. and one grandson – Robert Mark Jackson.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Alexander Jackson and Ollie Pearl Kaiser Jackson, three brothers, Clyde Jackson, Horace Jackson and Freddie Jackson and two sisters, Mary Francis Bostick and Bernice McDowell.

VINA, AL. – Melanie Dawn George, 40, died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born January 30, 1973 in Alabama.  She was a cosmetologist for 5 years.

RED BAY, AL. – Keith Credille, 48, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born September 1, 1964 in Russellville, Al. and was a truck driver for 27 years.

RED BAY, AL. – Wanda Fitts, 61, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 at her residence. She was born December 4, 1951 in Russellville, Al. and was a nurse for Dr. Kevin Kelly for 25 years. She was a member of Free Will Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Fitts, a daughter, Belinda Kaye Long and her parents, Glover and Nople Garrison.

GOLDEN, MS – Charles Ray Stacy, 52, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 at his residence. He was born July 18, 1960 in Red Bay.

 

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Ridge Cemetery with Bro. Terry Parrish officiating.  Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Golden, Ms. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

 

Survivors are two brothers-Orville Stacy (Betsy) of Holly Springs, MS and Ellis Stacy (Shelia) of Golden; two sisters-Mary Dyer of Red Bay and Violet Bishop (Evan) of Vina, AL; several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Velon Augustus and Vella Florine Reese Stacy; one brother-Arthur Stacy; grandparents-Archie and Maude Reese and Orville and Ethel Stacy.

GOLDEN, MS – Tommy Lee Ray, 68, died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at his residence. He was born March 22, 1945.  He was a member of Pineville Baptist Church and was the former butcher for Big Star in Red Bay.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay with Bro. J.C. Blackburn and Bro. David Ray officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Golden, Ms. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

He was preceded in death by his parents-Rev. Eugene and Ruble Grissom Ray and one sister-Glenda Ledbetter.

RED BAY, AL. – Reba M. Taylor, 97, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Generations of Red Bay. She was born February 19, 1916 in Franklin County, Al. and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Andrew Taylor, a son, Vernon Matthew Taylor, her parents, William McKinney and Doskie Strickland McKinney and nine brothers and sisters.

RED BAY, AL. – James Rayford Seahorn, 54, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 in Red Bay. He was born April 20, 1958 in Alabama and was a salesperson for 30 years. He was a past member of the Red Bay City Council, a member of Pilot Hill Baptist Church and a Mason in Burleson Lodge #143 in Red Bay.

 

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 18, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. A.H. Akins officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Red Bay, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

 

Survivors are two children – Ryan Seahorn and Jordan Seahorn (Melissa) all of Red Bay, Al.; one grandchild – Gunner Seahorn; his mother – Jeraldine Seahorn, Red Bay, Al.; one brother – Keith Seahorn (Sarah) Red Bay, Al.; two sisters – Donna Malone (Tim) Glade Springs, Va. and Dianna McCollum (David) Lancaster, Ca. and a host of nieces and nephews.

RED BAY, AL. – Bryan Keith Reese, 22, died Friday, April 5, 2013 in Oneonta, AL. He was born July 30, 1990.  He was on the media team at “The Basement” ministry in Birmingham, AL and was a member of the youth staff for Free Life Worship Center.  While living in Red Bay, he worked with Grace Community Fellowship and Trinity Assembly of God.

WANDA BLACKBURN

VINA, AL. – Wanda Lee Parker Blackburn, R.N., 62, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at home surrounded by her family after a long illness.  Wanda was born June 19, 1950 to the late Charles and Earnestine Parker. She loved being with her family and friends and she never met a person she did not like. She attended Red Bay High School. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and then went on to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in June 2001. She was an instructor of LPN Nursing and was selected as Nurse of the Year of Tennessee in 2004. She was a compassionate and caring person and  was loved by her patients, co-workers and nursing students. She was a member of Trinity Assembly of God, Red Bay, Al.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Trinity Assembly of God, Red Bay, Al. and with Bro. David Kelley and Rear Admiral Joseph H.Miller officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

BELMONT, MS. – Keith Cosby, 54, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at ECM Hospital. He was born March 15, 1959 in Iuka, Ms.. While attending high school he was an Auxillary Deputy and then became a dispatcher for the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department. He was former police officer for the City of Cherokee and Leighton and former police chief for the City of Red Bay.  He had been an employee of Deaton Funeral Home since 1995. He will be missed by many including his cat, Punkin.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Mynot Cemetery. Burial will be in Mynot Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

RUBLE MILLS

SHOTTSVILLE COMMUNITY – Technical Sergeant Ruble Lee Mills, retired, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born in Hamilton, Al. August 16, 1941, the youngest child of David and Nettie Duncan Mills.

September 25, 1965, he married his soul mate and the love of his life, LaVale Kennedy. They lived together 47 years before his untimely, unexpected death.

He served 38 years in the military, retiring in 1998. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He took great delight in watching his grandson play ball and watching his granddaughter dance. Ruble and LaVale enjoyed relaxing together, taking day trips and watching Western movies. He was a friend to all who knew him, especially those who shouted,”Roll Tide!”

While Ruble attended Hamilton (Al.) High School, he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football. Shortly after his high school graduation he joined the Air Force. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Ruble served eight years in the Air Force, twelve years in the Alabama National Guard and then eighteen years in the Army A.G.R. Program.

While LaVale enjoyed a career with Harden Publishing, he became her publicist and business manager. He enjoyed working at the newspapers under the Harden umbrella.
Ruble and LaVale were members of First United Methodist Church, Red Bay, where he served in several capacities.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Shottsville Methodist Church with Rev. Buster Timmons officiating. Burial will be in Shottsville Cemetery with full military honors.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

RED BAY, AL. – Nancy Mae Poores, 68, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at ECM Hospital. She was born March 22, 1944 in Red Bay, Al. She was retired as a seamstress from Blue Bell.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Red Bay, Al.

VINA, AL. – Patricia Ann Blackburn, 55, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the North Ms. Medical Center. She was born June 12, 1957 in Red Bay, Al. to Z.L. and Mildred Scott. She was a homemaker and had previously worked at Wrangler and Decorator Industries.  She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Vina, Al.

RED BAY, AL. – Benny Don Cox, 56, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at his residence. He was a native of Alabama and a carpenter.

GOLDEN, MS. – Elizabeth Jane Renfroe, 70, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Magnolia Regional Health Center, Corinth, Ms. A native of Mississippi, she was a factory worker for 40 years. She attended Banner Church of God of Prophecy. She enjoyed gardening and working with flowers and crafts.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 21, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. W.E. Johnson and Bro. Michael Garrison officiating.  Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery, Dennis, Ms.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband- Ralph Renfroe, Golden, Ms.; three sisters – Azelee Kelton (Murl), Evanell Garrison and Lenneth Pounders (Jerry), all of Golden, Ms.; a brother-in-law – James Jackson, Belmont, Ms. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sons – Timmy Renfroe, Terry Renfroe and Rodney Renfroe, her parents, Govner & Era Moxley, a sister, Letta Jackson and two brothers, Manard Moxley and Collin Moxley.

VINA, AL. – William Edward Barksdale, 82, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was a native of Franklin County, Al. and a member of Pilot Hill Baptist Church. He was a custom homebuilder and craftsman locally and in the Shoals area from 1965 until months prior to his passing. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing and both Auburn and Alabama football games.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years – Marjorie Barksdale, Vina, Al.; two sons – Alan Barksdale and wife, Donna, Russellville, Al. and Alton Barksdale and wife, Rhonda, Red Bay, Al.; three brothers – Troy Barksdale  and wife, Linda, Gene Barksdale and Bill Barksdale and wife, Barbara; three sisters – Marvalene Yocum, Aline Bendall and Jessie Holland; five grandchildren – Keesha Lindley and husband, Anthony, Ryan Barksdale and wife, Anna, Emily Barksdale, Alison Barksdale and Will Barksdale; five great-grandchildren – Carlie, Kaylie, Carson, Clayton and Katlyn Lindley and a host of nieces and nephews.

FAY THORN

RED BAY, AL. – Fay Thorn, 90, died Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born February 22, 1922 in the Pogo Community. He was co-owner of Thorn & Thrasher Garage in Red Bay for many years. He was one of the founding fathers of the Pleasant Site Volunteer Fire Department February 22, 1991 and was the only chief. A member of Harmony Baptist Church for over 70 years, he was a deacon since 1967 and Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II in the occupation of Japan.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, at Harmony Baptist Church at Pleasant Site with Bro. Roger Wood and Bro. Greg Thorn officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Site Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by one son – Norman Thorn (Lottie) Red Bay, Al.; one daughter – Rebecca Holland (Randy) Red Bay, Al.; one brother – Ray Thorn (Hildred) Red Bay, Al.; four grandsons – Tim Thorn, Greg Thorn (Kristie), Radley Holland (LaKesha) and Reggie Holland (Lauren); six great-grandchildren – Jordan Thorn, Matthew Thorn, Austin Thorn, Nicholas Thorn, Brantley Holland and Case Holland; and one great-great-granddaughter – Ansley Brooke Hallman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Malene Bates Thorn, his parents, Luther Dow and Nannie Russell Thorn and a brother, Milton Thorn.

RUSSELLVILLE, AL. – Earl Grimes, 83, died Friday, February 1 at ECM Hospital. He was born in Prentiss County, MS to Jerdon and Maudine Ivey Grimes. He was a machinist for 40 years and a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

RED BAY, AL. – Josh Peck, 29, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in Vina, Al. He was born January 17, 1984 in Red Bay, Al. and was an employee of Tiffin Motor Homes for five years. He was a member of the Red Bay Rescue Squad.

JOEL COLLUM

RED BAY, AL. – Joel Dean Collum, Sr., 81, left his earthly suffering behind on Monday, January 28, 2013 surrounded by family. He was born January 5, 1932 to the late Joe W. and Ona McAfee Collum. He was a member of Red Bay Free Will Baptist Church. He was a former Sunday School teacher and Trustee. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He was a member of the American Legion Post 120 of Red Bay where he was past Commander and Adjutant. He was a past Commander of District 5. As long as his health permitted, Joel put up the flags on the streets of Red Bay on all flag flying days. He traveled the world while serving his country, but never wanted to live anywhere other than Red Bay. Joel loved his God, family, church, country and Alabama football in that order.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Steve Lindsay and Bro. Ross White officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Joel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen Collum, Red Bay, Al.; two sons – Joel Collum, Jr. (Barbara) Nashville, Tn. and Jim Collum (Cyndi) Jackson, Tn.; two daughters – Rhonda Condrey (Jerry) Florence, Al. and Wanda Berry (Joe) Madison, Al.; grandchildren – Amber Patterson (Leon) Midway, Ms., Leslie, Matthew and Zachary Collum, Nashville, Tn., Page Berry, Madison, Al. and Sydney and Kyle Griffin, Jackson, Tn.; great-grandchildren – Kix, Beau and Arabella Patterson; sister – Lamell Roberts, Baldwyn, Ms.; seven nephews and eight nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Delmer Collum; four sisters, Reca Emerson, Ara Collum, Vernice Stacy and Tressie Cartwright; one niece, Glendell Stacy and one nephew, Wendell Emerson.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

VINA, AL. – Buddy W. Barker, 78, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Huntsville Hospital. He was born in Franklin County, AL and worked in construction for 30 years.  He was a member of Red Bay Church of Christ and was a veteran of the US Army.

RUSSELLVILLE, AL. – Leslie Denise “Tooter” Feltman, 41, died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Helen Keller Hospital. She was born in Alabama and was a nurse.

RED BAY, AL. – William Paul Thorn, 84, a faithful servant to his Lord, went to his heavenly home on January 12, 2013 at his residence.  He was a devoted minister, father and friend.  He was a Baptist minister and pastor for 48 years.  He was a member of Burnout Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at Burnout Baptist Church, Highway 24, Red Bay, AL at 2 p.m. Monday, January 14.  Officiating will be Bro. Dan Hindman, Bro. Jim Gables and Bro. Bobby Amos. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his four sons-Ronald and wife Karen of Red Bay, David and wife Ann of Birmingham, Donald and wife Dawn of Red Bay, Mike and wife Jill of Sumrall, MS; one daughter-Shewana Ashe and husband Jeff of Pontotoc, MS; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-Louise Kitchens and Opal Thorne both of Muscle Shoals, AL.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marjorie H. Thorn; his parents-William A. and Dezz Thorn; two brothers Elmer Thorn and Ernest Thorn and one sister Madge Donaldson.

RED BAY, AL. – Dean Allan Buffington, 44, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at his residence. He was born October 6, 1968 in Sewickley, Pa. and was a construction worker. He was a member of Community Center Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Edgar Buffington and Rose Marie Gorius Buffington.

JULIA JARNIGAN

Julia Estelle Lacey “Judy” Jarnigan, 88, died at her Cedar Creek home near Red Bay, Alabama, Sunday, December 23, 2012 after an extended illness.
A native of Acton, Alabama, she graduated from Vincent High School and, like her father before her, attended Massey Business College in Birmingham. She then worked with Moore & Handley Hardware in Birmingham.
After marriage, she taught briefly at James Chapel School in Dempsey in Franklin County. She was a substitute teacher at White Oak School in the Cedar Creek community.
Mrs. Jarnigan was an artist, poet, quilter and gardener. She did bird counts for Cornell University.
She did extensive biographical and historical research of her husband’s families. The Lacey lineage of Mrs. Jarnigan passes back to a baron who came to England during the Norman conquest. Her Acton lineage was also prominent in early English history.
A member of the Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, she also served it as Sunday School clerk and teacher.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. until noon, Wednesday, December 26, at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Alabama 247. Funeral services will follow at noon at the church with Bros. Silas Oliver and Eddie Wix officiating. Bill Jarnigan will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Cedar Creek Cemetery.
She is survived by daughter Gail Atkins (Neil), of Red Bay; sons William M. Jarnigan, of Florence, Gary Jarnigan (Marlene), of Muscle Shoals, and Phillip Jarnigan (Cathy), of Red Bay; grandchildren Emily Horton (Jamey), of Madison, Alabama; Betsy Jarnigan and Julie Jarnigan, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Wesley Jarnigan, of Red Bay; great-grandsons Lucas and Caden Horton, of Madison; brother Gene Lacey, of Birmingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Jarnigan, of Red Bay; parents, John Thomas and Rosa Ethel Lacey, of Shelby County, Alabama; her brothers Thomas, Jr., of Jefferson County, Alabama, and Paul Lacey, of Merritt Island, Florida, and sisters Madge Seifert, of Columbiana, Alabama, and Mary Hoyle, of London, Alabama.
The family would like to thank nieces Diane Baggett and Katherine Johnson for their daily care of her. Gentiva Home Health and Hospice of Tennessee Valley personnel were also very helpful.

VINA, AL. – Anna Faye Ozbirn, 68, died Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Generations of Red Bay. She was born in Hodges, AL to William and Ella Mae Wilson Chamblee. She was a member of Atwood Baptist Church.

Survivors are her husband-Charles Ozbirn of Vina; two sons-Craig Ozbirn (Patricia) of Vina and David Ozbirn (Shelley) of Belmont; three grandchildren-Robert Ozbirn (Jessica), Lisa Ozbirn and Tony Ozbirn; one great granddaughter-Aubrey Ozbirn; four sisters-Lorner Strickland (Bernice), Yvonne Williford (K.V.), Joyce Mae Holland (J.T.) and Carol Jones (Kenneth); brother-in-law-Archie Hardin.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-Karen Ozbirn; a sister-Jean Hardin and two brothers-Stan and Ronnie Chamblee.

RED BAY, AL. – Velma Ree Wingo Harden, 94, died Monday, December 17, 2012 at her residence. She was born July 12, 1918 in Rienzi, Ms. and had been an employee of Golden Manufacturing. She was a member of Red Bay Free Holiness Church.

KENNETH BLACKLIDGE

RED BAY, AL. – Kenneth Blacklidge, 91, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at Cypress Cove in Muscle Shoals, AL. He was born January 24, 1921 in Alabama. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 22 years.  He was a member of Pleasant Site Church of Christ and was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was stationed in China, Burma, and India Campaign from 1942-1945.  He as a member of Company C 40th Battalion Signal Corp.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 16, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Dayton Martin officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife of 65 years-Annie Keeton Blacklidge of Pleasant Site; Seven children-Waymon Blacklidge and Janie Allen (Eddie) all of Pleasant Site, David Blacklidge (Patricia) of St. Joseph, TN, Janice Blacklidge Adams of Tuscumbia, Randy Blacklidge (Pam) of Athens, Danny Blacklidge (Anita) of Muscle Shoals, and Pam Lewey (Horace) of the Cedar Creek Community; one brother-Franklin M. Blacklidge (Frances) of Florence; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

VINA, AL. – William Edward “Bud” McCarley, 85, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at Baldwyn Nursing Facility. He was born May 18, 1927 in Alabama. He worked for 3M for 17 years and was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War.

RED BAY, AL. – Sammie E. Nelson, 77, died Friday, December 7 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born in Mississippi to Samuel and Mary Crumley Elrod. She worked at Lance Garment for 26 years and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

RED BAY, AL – James Robert “J.R.” Spencer, 73, died Friday, November 30, 2012 at ECM Hospital. He was born August 14, 1939 in Alabama. He was a pilot and a veteran of the US Army.

RED BAY, AL. – Edna King Holley, 90, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Al. She and her late husband, Odus, owned and operated King’s Department Store in Red Bay for fifty years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al. She enjoyed activities with her family, traveling and being a member of the Red Bay Garden Club. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a dear friend.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, November 30, at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens, Florence, Al. with Bro. Larry Hill officiating. Burial will be in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens, Florence, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

RED BAY, AL. – Molene Vaden Clark, 87, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 at Helen Keller Hospital. She was born in Itawamba County, MS. to Carl Turner and Clara Mae Pounders Vaden. She was a member of Mt. Olive Methodist Church and was a special education teacher at Red Bay School for 14 years.

RED BAY, AL. – L.D. Overton, 64, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Helen Keller Hospital, Sheffield, Al. He was born in Lawrence County, Alabama. He was a factory worker and had worked as a welder for Heil for 26 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam.

VINA, AL. – Crystal Faye Raper, 42, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born in Dearborn, Michigan and was a factory worker for 20 years.

RED BAY, AL. – Margie Geneva Wasion, 70, died Thursday, November 15, 2012 at her residence. She was born April 8, 1942 in Red Bay, Al. and was a seamstress. She was a member of Calvary Family Worship Center, Golden, Ms.

VINA, AL. – William “Bill” Davis, 86, died Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Sanctuary Hospice. He was born August 13, 1926 in Itawamba County, MS. He was a farmer for more than 60 years and a member of Shady Valley Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the US Navy.

AUSTIN, TX. – Daniel Webster Duncan, 89, died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at North Austin Medical Center. He was born June 13, 1923 in Red Bay, Al. and was retired from the Texas State Highway Department in 1988. He was a member of Bammel Road Church of Christ where he had been baptized.

ANDERSON, AL. – Betty Joyce McCarley Welch, 78, died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Glenwood Healthcare, Florence, Al. She was born January 16, 1934 in Hodges, Al. She was secretary to the Tax Assessor in Lake County, Il. for 25 years.

She is survived by her children – Richard D. McCarley, Lovetta McCarley Ashe and Harold B. RED BAY, AL. – Sandra “Sandy” Hester George, 65, of Red Bay, passed away Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Red Bay Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer, AML.

Sandy was at home in Red Bay after having raised her family in Muscle Shoals, Al. She worked for many years in the offices of area nursing homes. She was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was an excellent cook and made everyone feel welcome and important. Sandy loved her gardens and was a member and past president of the Red Bay Garden Club. Sandy was of the Baptist faith and a graduate of Red Bay High School.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, at Burnout Missionary Baptist Church, Vina, Al. with Bro. Greg Philamlee officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Sandy is survived by her husband of 47 years – Hoyt George, Red Bay, Al.; daughter – Laryessa Holmes (John)  and grandson – Ian Holmes,  Chattanooga, Tn.; father – Bertram Hester, Vina, Al.; sister – Pamela Hendon (David) Sheffield, Al.; nephew – Corey Hendon (Kelly) and great-nephew – Casey Hendon, Athens, Al.

RED BAY, AL. – Waymon “Bodge” Gober, 68, died Monday, October 22, 2012 at Cottage of the Shoals in Tuscumbia, Al. He was born March 29, 1944 in Atwood, Al. and had worked at Ocean Spray Cranberry Co., North Chicago, Il. He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al.

DANIEL LEWIS HALL

RED BAY, AL. – Daniel Lewis Hall, 92, passed away Monday, October 22, 2012 at Generations of Red Bay. He was born and raised in Itawamba County, Ms. and was a member of Trinity Assembly of God. He was a former member of the Red Bay City Council and former fire chief for the Red Bay Volunteer Fire Department. He married Hazel Erlene Russell on July 3, 1940 and they were still together in Generations of Red Bay. Dan was well-known in the community as a car dealer and at the age of 90, he was a familiar figure in Red Bay at his produce market. He enjoyed music and his guitar and was a member of the first FFA String Band at RBHS in 1938. The tradition has continued in his family with a granddaughter who was a FFA String Band member and now a great-granddaughter who is a current FFA String Band member.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. David Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery, Red Bay, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

RED BAY, AL. – Ruby Elouise Heavner, 83, died Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at her residence. She was a native of Itawamba County, Ms., a homemaker and formerly a resident of Hammond. She attended Northside Baptist Church, Red Bay, Al.

GOLDEN, MS. – Derrick Bradley Gasaway, 33, died Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at his residence. He was born February 25, 1979 in Red Bay, Al. and was a construction worker. He attended Fairview Baptist Church and he went home to be with the Lord.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, September 21, at Fairview Baptist Church with Bro. Gene O’Brian, Bro. Billy Adams and Matthew Robinson officiating. Burial will be on his family’s land in Fairview. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are one daughter – Hannah Gasaway; his mother – Rhonda Altom (Mike) Tupelo; his father – R.L. Gasaway, Fairview; five brothers – Tim Gasaway, Scotty Gasaway, Austin Gasaway, Matthew Gasaway and Michael Altom; three sisters – Melissa Funderburk, Kim Hacker and Meagen Robinson and nieces and nephews – Jessica & T.C. Gasaway, Gavin, Gage and Garren Earp, Presley Funderburk and Miles, McKayla and Maggie Robinson.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James H. & Jennie Barker and Robert & Ray Gasaway; a niece, Chelsey Hacker and a nephew, Mobley Robinson.

HODGES, AL. – Bonnie Beard, 80, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Generations of Red Bay. She was born March 22, 1932 in Franklin County, Al. She was retired from Wrangler after 37 years. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Pastor James Yielding officiating. Burial will be in Holly Springs Cemetery, Hodges, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two sons – Donald Beard and Billy Joe Beard, both of Hodges, Al.; one daughter – Barbara Faye Grant (Ricky) Easley, SC.; three sisters – Johnnie Mae Jaehne, Kenosha, Wi., Ann Wood (Claudie) Belmont, Ms. and Vicki Evans, Hackleburg, Al.; one brother – Allen Burgett, Killen, Al.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Beard, her parents, Lewis Thomas Burgett and Lena Mae Files Burgett, a son, Johnny Ray Beard, a brother, Alfred Thomas Burgett and a sister, Dorothy Moore.

RED BAY, AL. – Pauline Sartain Jackson, 90, died Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Helen Keller Hospital. She was born May 4, 1922 to A.G. and Vira Sartain.  She was a lifelong member of Red Bay Church of Christ.

RED BAY, AL. – Charles O. Gober, 82, died Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was born June 22, 1930 in Alabama and was retired from Chrysler Corporation, Kenosha, Wi.  He was a member of Eastside Church of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

VINA, AL. – Jeffrey Chester Childers,43, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Marion County, Al. He was born October 12, 1968 in Red Bay, Al. and was a supervisor at Tiffin Motor Homes. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, a pee wee football coach and little league baseball coach for his son, Austin’s team.

GOLDEN, MS. – Elaine Credille Boyd, 61, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at her residence. She was born August 16, 1951 to Cecil F. Credille Sr. and Marion Reece Credille. She was a retired from Wrangler and was a member of Fairview Holy Church of Christ.

RED BAY, AL. – Julie Ann Monroe Buford, 48, of Arlington, TX, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in Texas.  Julie loved going to church and enjoyed working at the Dallas Cowboy stadium.  She spent most of her time as a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club for the handicap and she loved her work there and made friends very easily.  She loved watching wrestling and volunteering her time to different church groups around Arlington.

Services will be Saturday, August 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL with Jeral Gillentine and Bro. William Lambert officiating.  Burial will be in the Red Bay City Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of eleven years-Kevin Buford of Arlington, TX; her father-Dave Robinson of Red Bay; three sisters-Jeannette Firnstahl of Merrill, WI, Stacey James (Sonny) of Red Bay and Janet Thornburg (Larry) of Iuka; two brothers-John Robert Bush of Ill., Jim E. Monroe of Alexandria, Ill.; a lot of close friends she considered family especially PaPa Jeral Gillentine who was like a second father along with his wife, Sue and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Bonnie Robinson.

RED BAY, AL. – John D. Cooper, 85, died Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Red Bay Hospital. He was a native of Franklin County, Al. and had been an employee of Mueller Copper Tube and Blue Bell. He attended Cornerstone Church of God and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

EDNA JAMES

VINA, AL. – Edna Johnson James, 75, of the Burnout Community went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 18, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was born November 29, 1936.  She was retired from Wrangler after more than forty years of service.  She was a member of Burnout Missionary Baptist Church.  She enjoyed being outdoors, especially harvesting a garden every summer.  Until her health declined, she attended all Alabama home football games.  She enjoyed various types of needlework such as quilting, crocheting and needle embroidery.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 20, at Burnout Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Dan Hindman officiating.  Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Johnnie Houston James; Two sons-Jerry James (Lynette) and Terry James (Cyndi); eight grandchildren-Heather Schwartz (Meyer), Neesha Scott (Derek), Amy Bolding (Brad), Todd James (Kendra), Emily Hagood (Jon), Katie James, Sara Gillentine (Joe), and Anna Barksdale (Ryan); thirteen great grandchildren-Kade, Kyser, Madelyn, Kylee, Coby, Brady, Khloe, Zoe, Bree, Noah, Harper, Isabelle, Eva Claire, and Baby Scott due in February; three sisters-in-law-Marv Coats, Martha Oliver and Barbara Collum (Forby).

She was preceded in death by her parents-Sumpter and Altie Johnson and two brothers-Hershel and Sam Johnson.

RED BAY, AL. – Helen Morris Fears, 84, died Friday, August 17, 2012 at Southern Magnolia Estates in Golden, MS. She was born July 8, 1928 in Madison County, AL. She was a minister’s wife who served along with her husband, Rev. William E. Fears in Red Bay, Lexington, Attala, Piedmont, Roanoke and retired in Hokes Bluff.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 20, at Cameron United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gurley, AL with Rev. Billy L. York officiating.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are three children-Teresa Fears of Red Bay, Donald Fears (Anne) of Decatur, GA and Neil Fears (Deborah Bailey) of New Orleans, LA; two grandchildren-Joseph Fears (Fiance-Catie Sonnier) and Chase Fears; one brother-Aubrey Morris of Kernersville, NC; sister-in-law-Mary Morris of Huntsville; several nieces and nephews.

J.T. HOLLAND

TREMONT, MS. – J.T. Holland, 85, went to his eternal heavenly home on August 16, 2012. Born January 22, 1927, he was the fifth child of Delton and Arie Holland of Red Bay, Al. He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was an electrician and veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He was a loving husband, father and pop-paw and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 19, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Bro. Matthew Haney and Bro. Billy Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gladys Faye Scott Holland; one son – Ronnie Holland (Gena); one daughter – Sherry Boyd (Randy); one brother – Thurston Holland; two sisters – Cutaw Manasco and Brenda Humphres; three grandchildren – Tara Enlow (Ryan), Tristan Holland and Wesley Holland (Marisa); two great-grandchildren – Taryn Boyd and Ian Enlow and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Fred Holland, F.V. Holland and R.B. Holland, three sisters, Mildred Caudle, Lorine Singleton and Geneva Griffus and one grandson, Drew Boyd.

GOLDEN, MS. – Jacqueline Denise Hutcheson, 44, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at Darlington Oaks, Verona, Ms. She was born October 16, 1967 to Jacky and Peggy Moxley Ginn. Denise was always a very loving, caring and kind person who always put others before herself even until her last days.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jerry Ginn officiating. Burial will be in Belmont Memory Gardens, Belmont. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

She leaves behind her husband, Wayde Hutcheson, Golden; son – Corey Hutcheson (Whitney) Red Bay, Al.; daughter – Faith Cody (Jacob) Red Bay, Al.; father – Jacky Ginn, Golden; grandmother- Pauline Ginn who lives at Generations of Red Bay; two sisters – Robin Higginbottom (Eric) Fulton and MaKenzie Cruse (Joey) Golden; one brother – Greg Ginn, Golden; her step-mother – Ruth Ginn, Belmont; father & mother-in-law – Herman & Oneice Hutcheson, Red Bay, Al.; one grandson – Aiden Douglas Hutcheson and another grandson due in September, Paxtyn Jake Cody which Grammy had already named “Little Pac-Man”; one granddaughter – Keira Noelle Cody; nieces, nephews and a true friend from childhood, Tena Thorn Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Moxley Ginn at age 47 and her grandparents, H.D. & Esther Moxley and Raymond Ginn.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Paul Fancher, Stephen Webb, Brent Bolding, Drake Hutcheson, Joey Cruse and Seth Higginbottom. Honorary pallbearers will be Tanner Ginn, Jimmy Jackson, Chase Higginbottom, Matt Morris, John Morris and Anthony Morris.

Visitation will be  6-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al.   and from 8 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

FRANK GOBER

VINA, AL. – Benton Franklin Gober, 53, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 in the Red Bay Hospital where he had been a patient since June 22, 2012. He was born May 11, 1959, the third of three sons, to William Marlin Gober, Sr. and Retha Christine Harcrow Gober. While still an infant, he moved with his parents and one brother to Zion, Il. where he lived and attended school until he was 17. His parents then retired and they moved back to Alabama where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a loving son and brother and of great help to his mother, especially in the final years of his father’s life, as he did much to assist in his care.

Frank was employed over the years by several furniture makers and other industries in the Red Bay and Northeast Mississippi areas. Frank was a hard worker and rarely, if ever, complained about having to work hard. He made friends easily and was loyal to both friends and family. He enjoyed NASCAR, playing golf and going fishing with his friends whenever he had the opportunity. Some have said that Frank knew where some good fishing spots were and that his golf game had improved greatly over the past year or so. During the last several weeks, he missed the golfing and the fishing, but most of all he missed being out with his friends as much as he would have liked.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Dan Hindman officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his mother – Retha Christine Gober, Vina, Al.; two brothers – Marlin Gober Jr., Sheffield, Al. and Terry Gober (Sherry) Litchfield Park, Az.; one nephew – Troy Gober, Tempe, Az.; two nieces – Cindy Gober, Alton, Il. and T.J. Fleming (Nathan) Litchfield Park, Az.; one great-nephew – Aiden Fleming, Litchfield Park, Az.; former sister-in-law – Linda Gober, Godfrey, Il. and a host of cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Benton & Georgia Gober and Troy & Myrtie Harcrow.

Pallbearers will be Billy Chism, Jerry Self, Mark Hardin, Joel Garrison, Randy Elliott and Marvin Carlton.

DOROTHY SHOTTS

DOWLING, MI. – Dorothy Pettit Shotts, 82, died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at her residence. She was born May 28, 1930 in Clare County, Mi. She married Rev. Robert Lee Shotts on September 2, 1948 in Detroit, Mi. They moved to Greenville, S.C. and most of their married life was spent in Bedford and Crawfordsville, In. They moved to North Carolina and then to Michigan where they spent the past twenty years. She was a member of the Nathanael Greene Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Greenville, S.C. and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Battle Creek, Mi.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Shottsville Community Church. Burial will be in Shottsville Cemetery, Shottsville, Al.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are seven children – Judith Shotts Allen, Greenville, S.C., Juanita Shotts and Lili Cheney, Dowling, Mi., Robin Bishop and Misty Harley, Columbia, S.C., Faith Shotts-Flikkema, Grand Rapids, Mi. and Jonathan Shotts, Hastings, Mi.; one brother – Robert Pettit; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Dr. Ouida Shotts, two sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Shottsville Community Church.


MARLEY MAE THORN

RED BAY, AL. – Marley Mae Thorn, 86, died Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Southern Magnolia in Golden, MS. She was retired from Golden Manufacturing and a member of Pilot Hill Baptist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, AL. with Bro. A.H. Akins officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery, Vina, AL. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are five children-Ann Spencer (Charles) and Belton Johnson (Leisa) all of Vina, Nathan Johnson (Jeanette) and Tommy Johnson (Lori) all of Red Bay, Carolyn Pounders (Larry) of Belmont; nine grandchildren-Sarah Nichols (Kenny), Charles Spencer Jr. (Misty), Ricky Johnson (Effie), Paula Johnson, Mike Pounders (Maria), Kim Conwill (Brent), LaShay Blansett (Dickey), Bart Johnson (Amanda) and Cody Johnson; Fourteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and two brothers-Chester Hardin (Verlie) and Bob Hardin (Jean) all of Red Bay.

She was preceded in death by her husband-Clark Thorn; two sisters-Dovie Emerson and Tiny Gober and one brother-Jim Hardin.

Pallbearers will be Charles Spencer Jr., Michael Pounders, Ricky Johnson, Bart Johnson, Dickey Blansett and Kenny Nichols.

DEBRA ANN YOUNG

VINA, AL. – Debra Ann Young, 54, died Monday, July 9, 2012 at her residence. She was born June 14, 1958 in Winter Garden, Fl. and she was a homemaker.

Survivors are her husband – Larry Young, Vina, Al.; two daughters – Tami White (Allan Lindley) Vina, Al. and Tracie Whittington (Chuck) Bluntsville, Al.; her mother – Ruby Cantrell, Red Bay, Al. and five grandchildren – Patrick White, Casadie Massey, Chasadie Massey, Damion Whittington and Charlie Whittington.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bob Cantrell.

HODGES, AL. – Dale Craft Lawler, 56, died Friday, June 22, 2012 at his residence. He was a mobile home technician for more than 30 years. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, Hodges, Al.

Survivors are his wife of 31 years – Nella Lawler, Hodges, Al.; two sons – Josh Lawler (Bryna) and Kerry Lawler, both of Hodges, Al.; one daughter – Mitzi Kirby (Chris) Hodges, Al.; one brother – Dwight Lawler (Reba); his mother – Imogene Lawler; three grandsons – Cayden Lawler, Cai Lawler and Briley Kirby; one granddaughter – Baleigh Kirby and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Lawler and his grandparents, John & Ollie Lawler and Dunk & Gert Craft.

RED BAY, AL. – Danny Ray Peden, 62, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Red Bay Hospital. A native of Alabama, he was a farmer and mechanic for 30 years.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Danny Fuller officiating. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife – Cathy Peden, Red Bay, Al.; two sons – Eddie Ray Peden and Andy Peden, both of Red Bay, Al.; two step-children – Kim Thrasher, Haleyville, Al. and Chris Smith, Fulton, Ms.; his mother – Elouise Thorn, Red Bay, Al.; one sister – Lavonda Sparks, Russellville, Al. and five grandchildren – Erin Smith, Kylie Peden, Kara Thrasher, Kelcie Thrasher and J.T. Smith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Peden and a grandchild, Brady Thrasher.

DANNY OSBORN

VINA, AL. – Danny “Ozzie” Osborn, 60, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Franklin County and was an employee of Tiffin Motor Homes for 33 years. He was a firefighter at Burnout and Halltown and a member of Vina Fire and Rescue Squad for over 26 years.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jerry Humphres and Bro. Billy Nichols officiating.  Burial will be in Sparks Chapel Cemetery, Vina, Al.  Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are his wife – Nita Osborn, Vina, Al.; one daughter – Dannie Leigh Osborn, Vina, Al.; two nephews – John Gober, Huntsville, Al. and Josh Mitchell, Red Bay, Al. and one niece – Jessica Mitchell, Red Bay, Al.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Osborn and Alice Malone Ozborn, a daughter, Tiffany Lynn Osborn, a brother, Jimmy Lee Osborn and a sister, Betty Gober.

RED BAY, AL. – Exie Arniece Daniel, 95, died Friday, June 8 at Generations of Red Bay. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and was a teachers aid.

Survivors are two sons-William Eldon Daniel of Red Bay and Phillip Roger Daniel (Carolyn) of Huntsville; six grandchildren-Steven Willis Daniel, Susan Renee’ Harris, John William Daniel, Angela Michelle Scott, Emily Suzanne Lee and Ladonna Gayle Roshto; eleven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband-Bernard Willis Daniel; a son-James Willis Daniel; her parents-Thomas Leonard and Rachel Ann Lindley Garrison; five brothers and one sister.

COLLIERVILLE, TN. – Michael R. Wheeler, 61, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at his residence. He was formerly of Golden, Ms. and was a graduate of Belmont High School. He was a computer programmer and analyst for 25 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Red Bay, Al. and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors are his wife – Debra Fancher Wheeler, Collierville, Tn.; two sisters – Barbara Hammock (Larry) and Linda Hampton (John) all of Golden, Ms.; his mother-in-law – Betty Fancher, Red Bay, Al.; sisters-in-law – Brenda Keeton, Red Bay, Al. and Pansy Hall (Randy) Collierville, Tn.; four nephews – Todd Hammock, Terry Hammock, Brock Keeton and Mark Carnes; five nieces – Misty Hampton, Brooke Carnes, Briana Keeton, Katie Hall and Ally Hall and six great-nieces and nephews.

VINA, AL. – Geneva Griffus, 80, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at her residence. She was a native of Franklin County, Al. and had worked as a quality control supervisor for Warwick Enterprises. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Services will be at 12:00 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Vina, Al. with Bro. Lloyd Ray Griffus and Bro. Matthew Haney officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband of 64 years – Bill Griffus, Vina, Al.; one daughter – Paulette Johnson (Hank) Muscle Shoals, Al.; two sisters – Cutaw Manasco and Brenda Humphres (Lloyd); two brothers – J.T. Holland (Gladys) and Thurston Holland (Fay); one granddaughter – Angela Collum and one great-granddaughter – Allie Knigge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Delton Holland and Arrie Rollins Holland, two sisters, Mildred Caudle and Lorene Singleton and three brothers, Fred Holland, R.B. Holland and F.V. Holland.
